In order for children to care for our environment, they must first have plentiful time to play in and with it. For children to excel in math, it must be taught with joy. Learn how to support child-led, research-based learning of attribute, comparison, pattern, change, sets & sorting, spatial reasoning, quantity, and measurement for ages 0-8 outdoors and with natural tools you can bring inside. Dr. Solarski will draw on her experience as a former PreK-2 classroom teacher, math coach, Tinkergarten Leader, CPS parent, and nature play advocate. Using the Erikson Big Ideas of Early Math and Precursor Math Concepts texts as a guide, each topic will be explained and demonstrated through a presentation containing photographs and videos. There will be ample opportunity to tinker with natural items, reflect on our own experiences, apply new ideas, discuss with colleagues, and consider how to tailor takeaways to fit your classroom.
