Creating Sustainability Awareness and Action Through All-School Events

In this interactive session presenters will share lessons learned from their multicultural south side elementary school’s annual Sustainability Fair. A regular part of their school calendar, Sustainability Fair creates a sense of shared responsibility for the Earth and teaches sustainability as a shared value--while still being fun!

Presenters will outline the entire arch of their event as it exists, from selecting a theme, to planning and event execution to post event evaluation. Presenters will highlight important considerations like tying the event into existing programs; creating roles for teachers, community and parent volunteers; and student-led elements.

During breakout groups, participants will workshop potential event concepts and learn from each other. Presenters will share photographs, videos, and student work samples to help make the prospect tangible.

Though the presenters both work at a school, the concept of a community-wide event has relevance for neighborhood groups as well as nature and art centers.
