About me
James Kern (he/him) chairs Network49’s Environmental Justice Committee. He has designed and implemented climate-resiliency projects in Chicago. One, in the Back of the Yards, demonstrated the strength of community-driven projects for addressing climate change. Volunteer work at RefugeeOne and Centro Romero heightened his awareness of severe environmental stress in under-served communities. From work in Englewood, he learned the value of greenspace for social cohesion, physical and mental health, and environmental justice.
This year, Kern accepted MWRD’s award for public education. His background includes graduate coursework in rural sociology, M.S. in agronomy, M.Ed., and thirty-four years teaching in the US and Tanzania.
